MEL’S Classic Diner Pigeon Forge Review Fall 2018

So on my most recent visit to Dollywood I ventured out to explore more of the amazing attractions and restaurants in the area. If you have never been to Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge you really are missing out; the area is like someone took Orlando’s I-Drive and dropped it in the middle of the Smoky Mountains. There are a multitude of go kart parks ( Like Funspot ), Themed Restaurants, Dinner Shows, Gift Shops, Haunted Houses, Misc. Attractions, and the crowing jewel: Dollywood.
Right off the main stretch of road there is a classic gem dinner that is open late, and will make you feel like you stepped back into the days of leather jackets and rock n roll. This place is Mel’s Classic Diner; a themed classic dining experience. I found this place out by looking at what was open at 11pm on a Sunday night after a 7 hour drive from Sandusky Ohio. Mostly all that was open was McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Denny’s… so seeing a cool themed place open later I just had to stop.
Most of the diners were all older, and probably came for the Nostalgia; and all had that sweet southern hospitality. Seriously every time I come to Tennessee I meet the nicest people I have ever come into contact with. Anyways, the dinning area is a long stretched metal diner; with neon lights and music coming from the juke box near the entrance. The restaurant sells shirts and old school souvenirs; you can see in the above photo the display case. ( Also the cash out station )
Even though the place seemed very busy, we got right in with no wait.
1950’s memorabilia adorns almost every inch of available wall space in this place. I loved it!
It seriously felt like I just stepped back 60 years in time.
First up; The chili soup with cheese. 10/10 This was some of the best chili soup I have ever had. It was perfectly made, and anyone who is a chili connoisseur should stop at Mel’s next time they make a visit to Dollywood.
Morgan got a sandwich with coleslaw. A classic but very good on the execution. I had a sampling and it was very good. The coleslaw was made to perfection and complimented the rest of the sandwich very well. If you read my posts and have seen my food reviews you should know if I go to a place that serves breakfast all day I’m going to get it.
And that is exactly what I did. I got there breakfast sampler with a little of everything.
The pancake was very fluffy and had a great buttermilk taste to it. The grits were everything great about the south, and now take my second favorite grits in the area. ( second behind Dollywood’s Grits.. they are so good ) Bacon was 9/10, a tad to crispy but still delicious, and the hash browns were golden brown and crisped to perfection.
Overall the dinning experience was outstanding and I really enjoyed my time at Mel’s Diner. The dining experience was great, the theming was very well done, and the food was above my expectations and extremely good. If you are visiting Dollywood and need a late night place for some good food, are looking for a classic experience, or just want some good breakfast food Mel’s is the place to go.
Back in the car and headed back to the Hotel. Thank you Mel’s for a great dinner and a fun time. 🙂
